If everything they say maybe it is better to light a radio
if you got an invitation to be on a TV show and win lots of money, would you say no?
Twenty residents of Hampshire, England, come to the Great Big Giveaway Show to try their luck. But the show was a fake. The police had organized a sting, or trap. They made up a story in order to tempt these people out of their homes and arredt them. All of them were suspected of crimes such as theft, drunk driving or drug use.
At the fake TV studio, the hosts, Neil and Christine Hamilton, told the platers to press
a button to see who had a "lucky number". Of course everyone did. The excited "winners" went up to the stage. Instead of winnung money, they were arrested and handcuffed by the police. The police had been waiting for this moment for a long time.
Britainws Channel Five broadcast the event "live". This was true reality TV. Reporters asked Police Superintendent Robin Jarmen if he felt it was moral to embarrass suspect publicly. He replied that this sting had sent a clear message to criminals: The police would use any possible tactics to catch them. He said that the operation had been a huge success.
Another successful sting was called Operation Bastille. The police sent letters to 80 criminals who were suspected of minor crimes. The letters said that they had won electrical appliances. The "winners" had to call and set a time for delivery-a good way to make sure they were at home. None of them suspected a trick. In fact, some actually ran out to meet the delivery van. The police had been chasing these suspects for years.
It seems that some lawbreakers, even in hiding, forget to be careful when a prize is involved. Perhaps this proves the old saying: "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!"
